Congratulations to our 2025 Languages For All Award winner, The Niles Township District 219 Assyrian Team (IL).
The Niles Township District 219 Assyrian team (Christine Kochou Yousif, Ramina Samuel and William Sargool) has worked to create the first accredited high school Assyrian Language and Culture program in the United States. The team has developed a curriculum that did not previously exist for students to learn the indigenous language in a four-year sequence, mirroring other world languages at the high school level. This work has made it possible for districts nationwide to teach Assyrian as a World Language, and the program is already expanding beyond Illinois. From its earliest stages to the present, the District 219 Assyrian staff worked in collaboration with families and community members to have this curriculum approved and available for students.
