W-01 French Immersion Workshop ($125)
The French Influence on Chicago
Description: From its founding by Haitian Jean-Baptiste Pointe du Sable to architectural influences and one of the most extensive French Impressionist art collections in the world, the French presence remains strong in Chicago. Join local French guide Gigi Kuhn in an architectural walking tour of the Loop highlighting connections between Paris and Chicago. This will be followed by lunch in a local French bistro and an afternoon with a guided tour of the French Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago. Participants will walk extensively. This program is in French although the tour at the Art Institute may be in English.
W-02 German Immersion Workshop ($125)
Chicago Through a German Lens
Facilitator: Franziska Trepke, Goethe Institute, Chicago, IL
Description: Like many other cities in the Midwest, Chicago developed through the influence of German immigrants. Partnering with the Goethe Institute, come learn about the historical and cultural influence of German immigrants in Chicago, explore through a walking tour and scavenger hunt, enjoy lunch at the historic German-style Berghoff restaurant, and learn about German art through a guided tour at the Art Institute of Chicago. Participants will walk extensively. This program is in German. This workshop is a collaboration between the Goethe Institute and Central States.
W-03 Spanish Immersion Workshop A ($125)
CPS Elementary Dual Language Programs
Facilitator: Massiel Zaragoza, Chicago Public Schools, Chicago, IL
Description: Join other Spanish language educators to learn about the various Dual Language programs in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS). We will visit a model K-8 elementary program and we learn about other variations as well. Several Dual Language elementary schools also offer World Language programs in additional languages. This diversity provides a unique and enriching experience for Spanish-speaking participants while also highlighting the broader multilingual commitment of Chicago Public Schools. Participants will travel via public transportation (CTA) to the site which may include some walking. This program is in Spanish. This workshop is a collaboration between Chicago Public Schools Office of Multilingual and Multicultural Education (OMME) and Central States.
W-04 Spanish Immersion Workshop B ($125)
Chicago's Pilsen Neighborhood
Description: Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood is a vibrant community of Mexican culture and includes a large variety of murals and other street art along with restaurants and businesses. The National Museum of Mexican Art is a cultural landmark and houses one of the largest collections of Mexican art in the country. The visit to Pilsen will include a walking tour of the neighborhood focusing on the murals, lunch at a local restaurant and a visit to the National Museum of Mexican Art. Participants will travel via public transportation (CTA) to the site and walk extensively. This program is in Spanish.
