Immersion Workshop Options

W-01 Spanish Immersion Workshop 


Facilitator: Elizabeth Janzen, Olathe Northwest High School, Olathe, KS


Description: Spend the day exploring Hispanic culture in Kansas City and beyond with a focus on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals! Participants will learn about Latino art and Indigenous folk art in clothing and textiles, enjoy delicious Puerto Rican food, partake in a literary workshop with published Peruvian poet Sofiana Olivera, and get moving with a Latin dance class. All activities will be in Spanish. 



W-02 Chinese Cultural Workshop

Description: Join us for an immersive cultural workshop that promises a day of enriching experiences, from traditional Chinese wellness practices to artistic explorations. This workshop offers hands-on experiences with Qi Gong, Chinese cooking, one of the best Chinese art collections in the United States, and a calligraphy lesson. Join us for a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in Chinese culture! This workshop will use both Chinese and English as the languages of communication and is open to all modern language teachers.


W-03 French Immersion Workshop: The French Connection in KC

Description: This immersive language experience is for French teachers of all levels. The day will focus on Culture, Community, and Connections by demonstrating how teachers can target these standards by exploring "their own backyard." Participants will enjoy culinary experiences, a tour of French art, and a trip to the local French Immersion school. Join us to explore the French connections that can be found in Kansas City and develop ideas to connect your students to French in their own communities! All activities will be in French. 


W-04 German Immersion Workshop 

Facilitators: Rachel Benson, Lee's Summit R-7 Schools, Lee's Summit, Missouri, Nanette Bergen, Retired, Newton High School, Newton, Kansas

Description: Spend the day with us exploring German culture in Kansas City. The day will begin with a short concert by the Happy Wanderers 5-piece beer hall band followed by a docent-led tour through German works of art at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. We will continue our journey by dining at KC Bier Company, a Bavarian brewery, followed by a tour of the facilities (samples included.) We will finish the day with a visit to the WW1 monument and ascend to the top for some of the most spectacular aerial views of the city. All activities will be in German.
