Venez à St. Paul pour notre journée passée parmi les VOYAGEURS qui ont pris les premiers pas dans cette région. Ecoutons une présentation par Virgil Benoit, bien connu à cause de sa connaissance des gens et de la vie des voyageurs. Participons avec Jane Peck et sa troupe dans des danses et chansons traditionnelles de ces gens. Apprenons à danser et à chanter des chansons animées de l'époque. Puis rentrez chez vous avec un dossier pédagogique riche et pratique. Vous êtes invité à passer une journée en apprenant comment les voyageurs ont vécu et comment vous pouvez les faire vivre dans vos salles de classe. Venez nombreux!

Machen Sie am Donnerstag bei unsrer Faschingsfeier mit! Vormittags lernen wir beim Germanic-American Institute über verschiedene Faschings-, Karnevals- und Fasnetsbräuche genau Bescheid und erleben eine aufregende und farbenreiche Vorstellung des Neu Ulmer Narrenvereins. Beim Mittagessen in der Winzerstube in Hudson (WI) lassen wir uns von einer regionalbekannten, deutschsprechenden Persönlichkeit mit einer Büttenrede weiter unterhalten. Beispiele von Klassenprojekten werden auch vorgestellt, und wir werden über Nachmittagskaffee die Umsetzung dieser Ideen und Materialien miteinander diskutieren. Anschließend machen wir einen Ausflug zum Deutschen Haus, wo wir unseren Bedarf an Faschingsmaterialien sowie auch an deutschen Souvenirs, Schokolade und anderen Leckerbissen besätigen können bevor wir zum Hotel zurückfahren! ALLE AALAUFFF!!!
Der Preis schließt ein authentisches deutsches Mittagessen, Kaffee und Kuchen, kulturelle Vorstellungen und Unterhaltung, Fahrkosten und ein reichgefülltes Materialien-Paket mit kulturellen Informationen sowie auch Übungen für alle Sprachstufen ein. W-4 Japanese Language and Culture in Minnesota

Join us for a day of Japanese culture in Minnesota. In the morning we will have a panel of present and former deans of the Concordia Japanese Language Village, Mori no Ike speaking about the programs and philosophies of the village and how teachers can incorporate these into regular classroom instruction. Following that we will adjourn to an obento lunch at Fuji-ya, one of the premier Japanese restaurants in the Twin Cities. In the afternoon we will take a tour of the Japanese installations at the Minnesota Institute of Arts (MIA). The museum has a spectacular Japanese collection, including two rooms, an audience hall and a teahouse, which were painstakingly installed in 2001 by master craftsmen from Japan. The tour, led by a volunteer Japanese docent, will include a presentation of curriculum materials and ideas for how to use the MIA's newly constructed Web site to help teach art to our students. The day will be rounded out with a trip to Minneapolis' largest Asian market, United Noodle. All conducted in Japanese.

W-5 Un día de immersion: Encuentro latino

Nos encontraremos en el corazón de la comunidad latina de las ciudades gemelas para pasar un día para ir de compras en un mercado, almorzar, ver murales, y charlar con amigos. Empezaremos en el <Resource Center of the Americas> con un taller sobre la imigración en el cual hablaremos con algunos inmigrantes y haremos una similación que se puede llevar a su clase. Después habrá tiempo para visitar la biblioteca y la librería que tienen las colecciones bilingües más grandes de la region. Después de almorzar en un restaurante típico, iremos al Mercado Central con tiempo dedicado a ir de compras. Se reúne con el artista Gustavo Lira para una guía de los murales y las tiendas de la comunidad latina en San Pablo. Por supuesto, el buen professor quiere saber cómo llevar todo a la clase. Les prometemos experiencias y recursos que beneficiarán a todos. ¡Los invitamos!

The session includes project idea-sharing, effective leadership skills, how to write action plans and implement them, and time to work with the mentors to put the plans in action. W-8 How to Initiate the Change to TPRS in Your Department

Presenters share their experiences in the process of changing their department from traditional foreign language grammar-based curriculum and instruction to TPR Storytelling. Participants will receive practical ideas on implementing TPRS across all language courses to include: arranging for teacher in-services and training, adapting curriculum, and writing/acquiring TPRS materials. Examples of chapters from textbooks that have been adapted will be provided in addition to materials used in training.

W-9 Level One: No Student Left Behind

This workshop will present activities to engage ALL students in learning a second language. The focus will be on level one activities that will "spiral up" as students continue their study of L2. The four skill areas will be emphasized through a plethora of student-centered exercises that are standards-based. Key learning activities and student performance events will be shared. The activities will address a diverse group of learners, including those who are consistently difficult to engage in class.

W-10 Love Learning Language Via Songs and Theater Games

Discover fun, innovative ways to use songs and music to increase language skills. Develop chanting strategies that capture students' interest and enthusiasm. Sing folk and pedagogical songs, and learn techniques to manipulate them to improve communication, reading, and writing skills. Theater games include hilarious, open-ended role-playing ideas for basic vocabulary, "brain" games, and the production of a short play. Participants will enjoy fun, interactive activities for all ages and abilities. Examples are in Spanish, French, German, English; extensive handouts will be available.

(Fiktive) Zeitzeugen beleuchten historische Ereignisse aus ihrem (subjektiven) Blickwinkel und machen so Geschichte durch Geschichten erfahrbar. Ausgewählte Kapitel dieses Werkes stehen im Mittelpunkt von fächerübergreifenden, "standardsorientierten," multimedialen Unterrischtseinheiten für alle Spachwerbsstufen.

Representatives from the 17 member states of the Central States Conference will meet to share advocacy strategies that have been successful in their states. J. David Edwards will update the attendees on issues related to foreign languages at the national level. Find out the status of legislation on the national level that impacts foreign language education K- 16. Learn about funding opportunities via grants and special programs. Discuss current legislation and its impact on foreign language programs.

W-13 French Multiculturalism Through Film

This workshop will focus on a set of films that represent the diversity of populations in France and in French cités. Questions of identity, space, location, and socialization are addressed through the use of films such as Madame Rosa, Vivre au Paradis, Le Thé au harem d’Archi Ahmed, Mari-Line, Hexagone, Douce France, and Samia. The presenter has prepared some specific clips from a selection of films and a study guide for K-16 teachers.

W-14 German Music in the Classroom from Kindergarten to College

There is a wide variety of popular music in German suitable for classroom use. Some songs can be used best at the elementary and junior high/middle school level, while others are more suitable to senior high school or college. We will listen to and share teaching materials based on songs by Rolf Zuckowski, Gerhard Schöne, Jule Neigel, die Prinzen, die Wise Guys, Udo Lindenberg, Herbert Grönemeyer, Bettina Wegner, and others.

W-15 Immerse Them in Language and They Will Learn

Come and learn Japanese via immersion methods used at the Concordia Language Villages. Experience how it feels to learn another language when the teacher uses the target language exclusively. Participants will become students for a portion of the afternoon, learning Japanese as it is taught to beginners at Mori-No-Ike, the Japanese Language Village. Afterwards, there will be a discussion of the methods used, their effectiveness, and guidelines for teaching language using immersion methodologies.

W-16 Linking Reading and Writing in the Language Class (Repeat of a CSC 2002 workshop)

This workshop will focus on a variety of strategies to link reading and writing in the language class. It will include techniques such as using information grids, graphic organizers and interactive reading strategies. The workshop will also suggest innovative writing techniques from short warm-up activities to abbreviated “writing as process” strategy. A handout describing all activities will be distributed.

W-17 The Foreign Language Methods Course: The Anatomy of a Teacher Preparation Program

Participants will be actively involved in a series of strategies and methods used in the foreign language education program that promote a reflective teacher practitioner. Video clips, technology products, unit plans, and portfolios will be shown. Participants will receive a packet that contains everything from a syllabus to lesson plans and resources to build a model program.

The presenter demonstrates activities that worked for her during 20+ years of teaching. Communication (Goal 1) -- Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational -- as well as Culture (Goal 2) are reinforced via games, songs, and small-group activities.
