W-03 The Art of Teaching: Chinese Immersion Workshop

Presenter: Kaishan Kong, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Eau Claire, Wisconsin


Description: Join us for a unique full-day field trip opportunity to explore Chinese immersion programs in Minnesota! We will visit a Chinese immersion school, enjoy an authentic Chinese meal, and visit Asian exhibits in a local arts museum.


 

W-04 French Immersion Workshop

Presenters: Virginie Donzo and Matthew Lilly, Xperitas, Bloomington, Minnesota


Description:  For almost 200 years before Minnesota became a state, French was the primary European language spoken. You are invited to discover the beauty of French culture in the Twin Cities on this all day tour. It will include a cooking class/demo, a tour of French art at the Minneapolis Art Institute, lunch & program at the beautiful new Alliance Francaise, and a visit to Minnesota French Heritage site (s).


 

W-05 German Immersion Workshop

Presenters:  Hanna Edwards and Chris Grathwol, Xperitas, Bloomington, MN


Description:  Spend the day exploring German culture and education in the Twin Cities. You will spend time at the German American Institute in St. Paul, where you will take a pretzel making class and have a special program about Berlin that will provide you with classroom resources to take with you. Enjoy an authentic German lunch at the Black Forest Inn in Minneapolis, followed by a tour of the Twin Cities German Immersion School and local German heritage sites. All activities will be in German.


W-06 Spanish Immersion Workshop

Presenters:   Jenny Behrens and Emma Rojas, Xperitas, Bloomington, MN

 Description:  Discover the beauty of Hispanic culture in the Twin Cities. On this tour you will  see Spanish art/artists at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, you will visit a family owned Latino marketplace and restaurant for a delicious and authentic lunch, you will have a cultural culinary experience with chef Amelia Moreno- Damgaard, https://amaliallc.com, whose specialty is Guatemalan cuisine , that will give you ideas for cultural cooking with your students and more, all in Spanish!


W-07 Advocating for and Nurturing Less Commonly Taught Heritage Language Programs in Public Schools

Presenters:   Lenny Ulloa Silva, MCTLC,  Minnesota,  Jenna Cushing-Leubner, University of Wisconsin- Whitewater. Whitewater, WI


Description:  Explore ways to build heritage language programs by visiting two different program models in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Participants will first visit Txuj Ci, a Hmong language and culture elementary school in St. Paul. Lunch will be held at Hmong Village, an indoor market in St. Paul. We will then travel to Minneapolis South High School to see Somali heritage language courses. A debrief session will be held at the end of the day to share insights and brainstorm strategies.
